Brain Injury

What is it?

Brain injuries, or head injuries, are where damage occurs to the brain, this can occur through trauma (traumatic brain injury, TBI) or through other conditions such as tumours and meningitis (acquired brain injury, ABI).

The severity and the symptoms of the brain injury depend on where the damage is within the brain.

Each person with a brain injury presents very different, and may have a range of symptoms from the following

- weakness

- sensory loss

- co-ordination problems

- vision changes

- dizziness and balance issues

- cognitive difficulties (memory and thinking skills)

- emotional and behavioural changes

- spasms and stifness

- reduced function e.g walking, transferring

How Northern Neuro Rehab can help

Our specialist therapists at Northern Neuro Rehab can provide individualised assessment and treatment in order to meet your therapy goals.

Rehabilitation following a brain injury varies on the symptoms that you experience.

Often we see patients that have finished their NHS treatment are looking for ongoing therapy, but we also see clients that have had their brain injuries for a long while.

These clients benefit from ongoing therapy to maximise functional independence.

Some of our therapy treatments will be based around:

- strength exercises

- range of movement exercises

- sensory awareness

- exercise prescription

- co-ordination and balance

- visual rehab

- cognitive rehab (thinking and memory skills)

- equipment and adaptive aids

- specialist seating assessment and advice

- support to return to hobbies
