Parkinson's

What is it?

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that affects a particular area of the brain that makes the chemical dopamine.

This reduction in dopamine affects movement, such as tremor, stiffness, slow movements and freezing of movements.

There are also other symptoms such as changes in memory, poor thinking skills, anxiety and hallucinations.

There are over 40 symptoms of Parkinson’s, some of the common symptoms include:

- Tremor

- Stiffness (rigidity)

- Slowness of movement

- Freezing of movements

- Falls

- Memory and thinking problems

- Sleep problems

- Pain

Everyone’s experience of Parkinson’s is different, and it is difficult to say how symptoms might progress, but these symptoms generally worsen over time.

You may have some good days and some bad days.

Physical activity and exercise can have a positive impact on symptoms, and here at Northern Neuro Rehab we can provide an individualised assessment and treatment plan to help meet your personal goals and manage your symptoms.

How Northern Neuro Rehab can help

Physical activity is extremely important to manage the physical symptoms of Parkinson’s and our specialist therapists can help you to create an appropriate exercise plan, and even support you to attend a gym or leisure facility.

Some of the things that our treatment plans focus on include:

- Balance

- Strength

- Co-ordination

- Memory and thinking skills (cognition)

- Cueing strategies for freezing

- Falls prevention

- Exercise prescription

- Fatigue management

Sometimes we see people who have more severe symptoms of Parkinson’s and who may be in a more advance stage of their condition.

Some of our treatments may then focus on:

- Supporting family and carers on how to help you move

- Postural management (in bed or in the chair)

- Functional tasks

- Transfers and mobility reviews for carers

- Equipment recommendations
