Multiple Sclerosis

What is it?

Multiple Sclerosis is a neurological condition that affects both the brain and the spinal cord.

The body attacks it’s own tissue that coats nerves, called Myelin, and damages the Myelin coating, meaning nerve signals are interrupted.

More than 150,000 people in the UK have MS.

It is common to find out that you have MS in your thirties of forties.

MS tends to affect women more so than men.

There are four different types of MS, and our therapy at Northern Neuro Rehab will differ depending on the type of MS that you have.

Relapse-Remitting MS

This is where you have episodes called ‘relapses’ where you symptoms intensively worsen, and periods of ‘remission’ where symptoms stop progressing.

Secondary-Progressive MS

After around 10 years of a diagnosis of Relapse-Remitting MS, people often progress to Secondary-Progressive MS. This means that your condition progresses, but usually without the relapses.

Primary- Progressive MS

This type of MS steadily progresses over time, without periods of remission. Symptoms don’t tend to change in intensity.

Benign MS

This is a rare form of MS, where there are periods of relapses and then a complete recovery. This can only be diagnosed after a period of 10 to 15 years.

Some of the symptoms of MS include:

- Altered balance

- Altered vision

- Numbness and tingling

- Altered memory and thinking (cognition)

- Changes in emotions

- Stiffness and spasms

- Tremor

- Fatigue

- Bladder problems
