Motor Neurone Disease

What is it?

MND is a progressive neurological condition that affects the motor nerves within the body.

The motor nerves stop sending signals to the muscles, so information does not get sent to the body from the brain.

This can cause problems with walking, talking, eating, drinking and breathing. Every day function is affected with MND.

There are 5,000 adults in the UK with MND at any one time, and there is a 1 in 300 chance of getting MND. It is more likely to affect adults over the age of 50.

There are different types of MND and each progress in a different way.

Depending on what type of MND and what type of symptoms you have will depend on the treatment that Northern Neuro Rehab can provide.

Some of the symptoms include:

- muscles weakness

- muscles spasms

- stiff joints and redcuecd range of movement

- pain

- wekaned cough and breathing difficulties

- reduced mobility

- reduced day-day functioning

- emotional changes

- changes to thinking and behaviour

How Northern Neuro Rehab can help

Unfortunately there is no known cure for MND, however at Northern Neuro Rehab we can provide therapy that is beneficial for managing the symptoms of the disease and help to

maximise optimal function and independence.

Although the muscles that MND affects cannot recover, therapy can help to maintain muscle strength as long as possible.

Some of the treatments we can provide include:

- muscle maintenance

- range of movement exercises

- stretches

- posture management (in bed and in the chair)

- equipment and adaptation advise

- seating assessments and advice

- breathing exercises

- fatigue management

- carer and family advice/support

- moving and handling advice

Northern Neuro Rehab recognises that MND progression can be difficult for both the individual and their families.
